Dealing with acne can be painful, embarrassing, and frustrating, but the scars it leaves behind are a permanent reminder of the suffering. Acne scars can take the form of dark spots (hyperpigmentation) and/or textural (ice pick) scars. While moderate to severe scarring cannot be completely removed, drastic improvement can be made in their appearance. Depending on the type and severity of the scars, we may recommend microneedling, laser scar revision, or chemical peels to improve the skin’s appearance.
Fine Lines and Wrinkles
As we age, our skin forms fine lines and wrinkles due to dehydration, the breakdown of collagen, a reduction in skin thickness, and the loss of fatty tissue. For lines caused by repeated muscle movement (like the lines between our brows), Botox and Dysport are used to lessen muscle activity. Fine lines and “crepey” skin around the eyes, mouth, and other areas are usually treated with microneedling, laser wrinkle reduction, and skin care. Deeper folds and loss of volume are best treated with dermal fillers including Restylane and Juvederm.
A scar is a permanent patch of skin that grows over a wound. It forms when your body heals itself after a cut, scrape, burn, or sore. You can also get scars from surgery that cuts through the skin, infections like chickenpox, or skin conditions like acne. While they are permanent, scars of all shapes and sizes can be significantly improved with laser scar revision.
Stretch marks are long, narrow streaks, stripes or lines that develop on the skin and which differ in hue from the surrounding skin. They are the result of a sudden stretching of the skin and are extremely common. Anyone can develop stretch marks, although they tend to affect more women than men. Stretch marks can be visible on body parts including the tummy, thighs, hips, breasts, upper arms, and lower back. The marks form in the middle layer of the skin; when there is a constant stretch, the layer tears, leaving stretch marks. Fortunately we can improve the appearance of these marks with laser stretch mark revision. A series of treatments can create significant improvement in the size, appearance, and color of stretch marks.
There are a number of factors that will cause large pores, but of the many, there are three main culprits. The first one is age. As we age we will naturally lose the elasticity in the surrounding skin that supports the pores, causing pores to appear bigger than they actually are. Secondly, men are more likely to have larger pores compared to women from their genetic makeup and increased oil production. And last but not least, our body uses a substance called Sebum, which naturally hydrates our skin to prevent from drying. This substance however is very oily and individuals who produce more than average will find that oily skin causes larger pores. There are steps we can take to help minimize pore size, including microneedling, chemical peels, and a good skin care regimen.
Rosacea is a skin condition characterized by facial redness, small and superficial dilated blood vessels on facial skin, papules, pustules, and swelling. The exact cause of rosacea is unknown. Exposure to temperature extremes, strenuous exercise, heat from sunlight, severe sunburn, stress, anxiety, cold wind, and moving to a warm or hot environment from a cold one, such as heated shops and offices during the winter, can each cause the face to become flushed. Certain foods and drinks can also trigger flushing, such as alcohol, foods and beverages containing caffeine (especially hot tea and coffee), foods high in histamines, and spicy foods. Rosacea treatment with photorejuvenation is one of the most effective methods to eliminate the bothersome symptoms associated with this condition. With a sufficient number of treatments, this method may even eliminate the redness altogether, though additional periodic treatments will likely be necessary.
When skin is exposed to the sun, it causes an increase in the production of cells known as melanocytes that increase melanin in the skin, thus turning the skin darker. These dark skin patches are known as brown spots, age spots, dark spots, sun spots and liver spots. The spots are usually harmless, but many consider them unattractive and an indicator of “old age”. Age spot/sun damage removal with photorejuvenation is a popular choice because it delivers great results from the first treatment, although a series is often suggested for best results. When a patient has dark spots along with other concerns such as fine lines or acne scars, we suggest microneedling. Chemical peels are also a great choice for removing dark spots, and we always recommend a skin care regimen to help fade pigmentation and keep it suppressed after treatment.
Telangiectasia, the medical term for spider veins and broken capillaries, may appear anywhere on the face, typically around nose or under the eyes. The causes of spider veins on the face may differ from the causes on the legs or other areas. The red or bluish threads are injured veins or capillaries. Spider veins are usually harmless, but some people have a cosmetic concern over the condition. In fact, the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery found that 50 to 55 percent of American women complain about spider veins. Spider veins on the face are most effectively treated with lasers. Laser vein removal can effectively eliminate unwanted veins on the nose, cheeks, chin, and other areas of the face.
Spider veins are thin red lines or web-like networks of blood vessels that appear on your legs and feet. Genetics, smoking, obesity, and hormonal birth control can all contribute to the formation of spider veins. Spider veins are usually harmless, though they can sometimes cause aching, burning or pain, especially when you’ve been standing for long periods. Laser vein removal can precisely treat visible broken capillaries and spider veins, allowing you to avoid injections such as sclerotherapy.
Many patients suffer from unwanted fat under their chin, including many who maintain a healthy lifestyle. For those looking for a non-invasive treatment, Kybella is injected into the area under the chin and the fat cells are actually destroyed. Smartlipo, or laser-lipolysis, is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove unwanted fat and contour the chin area.
It’s not uncommon to have skin that feels coarse and irregular, which can be due to specific skin problems such as Rosacea or acne, but it can also be a product of sun damage, aging, or the result of using the wrong skin care products and poor exfoliation. Dry skin can also cause skin texture to feel rough and uneven, especially during the winter months. Uneven skin texture not only feels unpleasant, it makes skin look dull because it doesn’t reflect light as well. In addition, it makes it hard to apply cosmetics smoothly. Sun exposure causes the breakdown of collagen and elastin that gives skin its smooth texture and resiliency. Smoking also damages collagen and elastin and contributes to rough, prematurely aged skin. Aging is another common cause of irregular skin texture. With aging, surface skin cells aren’t shed as rapidly. This causes dead skin cells to build up; leading to skin that feels rough and has a dull appearance. Dry skin that lacks moisture also feels less smooth to the touch. Exfoliation treatments, including dermaplane and chemical peels can help remove dead skin cells and smooth the skin. Using the proper skin care products at home will improve the texture of the skin. For more severly damaged skin, we may recommend microneedling.
Many women and men suffer from unwanted hair growth on the face, neck, chest, back, and other areas of the body. Some are simply tired of shaving, waxing, tweezing, and plucking and are looking to remove unwanted hair without the tedious, painful, and often short-lived fixes. Laser hair removal provides a fast, easy solution for permanent hair reduction, allowing you to look and feel your best without all the hassle. Patients of all skin types and most hair types can be successfully treated using the latest laser technology.
Thin or Uneven Lips
As we age the lips become thinner, lose their shape, and fine lines develop around the mouth. Some patients have lip asymmetry, and some simply want fuller lips. Restylane and Juvederm fillers both provide natural enhancement to the lips. The type of filler used is determined by the patient’s condition and desired outcome.
Even with diet and exercise, most people have stubborn pockets of fat that seem impossible to lose. Today’s body contouring procedures can treat both large and small problem areas with little to no downtime. Non-invasive and minimally invasive body contouring gets rid of fat in trouble spots, like your abdomen, flanks, thighs, arms, and neck. Sculpsure is a non-invasive laser body contouring treatment that targets stubborn fat in just 25 minutes. Smartlipo removes unwanted fat with minimal downtime and less pain than traditional liposuction.
Volume loss occurs because of gradual changes in the appearance of the fat. We all have varying degrees of fat in our faces and a multitude of factors can cause changes to these fatty compartments. There is a loss both superficially and at a deeper level that comes along with aging, weight loss, too much sun exposure, or hormonal changes. Volume loss is addressed with dermal fillers like Restylane and Juvederm, which restore a youthful appearance to the face.
